In 1631, a City of London Merchant called Samuel Fortrey built himself a fashionable, new brick mansion on the south bank of the River Thames at Kew. This became a royal home with a unique and compelling story. In the 18th century, generations of royalty exchanged the intensely public life in town for more domestic retreats at Richmond and Kew.
